Campus Recruitment Drive – NITK-Surathkal

Widas Concepts drove its campus hiring initiative on 10th & 11th Aug 2018 in one of India’s premium engineering colleges – NITK- Surathkal.

The day was indeed exciting – We introduced our company, its philosophy, products and culture to a wide range of students from all over India. This was followed by a rapid aptitude plus coding challenge.To our delight, at the very first level of screening, we were able to shortlist 13 smart minds who were, no doubt, energetic Go-Getters and passionate Problem Solvers in the real sense of the word!

Our seasoned technical panel threw out tough challenges in the technical round to evaluate their undying appetite for programming and problem solving.


The drive ended with a final selection of 2 candidates. But we must confess, the selection of 2 from 13 was tough, intriguing and inspiring – all at the same time! By the end of the two-day process, we were very satisfied & thrilled to welcome these young coders!

Cutting edge technologies at Widas truly deserve high competence! We are sure these ignited minds would make a difference and take Widas to greater heights!

Data Science Conference - The Fifth Elephant

Friday was definitely an eventful day for our HR colleague, Bhakti, who was participating in a Data Science conference called “The Fifth Elephant”, at Bangalore. It is one of the most sought after platforms, where leading practitioners in the Industry come forward, speak on the recent advances in Data Science, share their experiences on challenges faced, the best practices adopted to make a difference, and above all, share ‘Knowledge’!
Like Robert Noyce, we too believe that “Knowledge shared is Power multiplied!”


There were diverse discussions across topics such as the Power of intuition in Data Sciences, Understanding scalability limits, artificial intelligence, research in machine learning and emerging domains. Being the only HR Specialist among a Data Scientists dominated crowd, the opportunity helped Bhakti get deep insights into the latest trends in the industry, specific focus points, and potential areas of business. She was, in fact, overwhelmed by the energy and enthusiasm shown by all the participants – much to her surprise, there were speakers ranging from 20 to 50 year olds who represented companies from start-ups to large corporates. Companies such as Flipkart, Uber, InMobi ,Walmart Labs, Sapient, Go-JEK, Qubole shared their experiences.


Having all said and done, we would be able to learn the outcome of the participation in detail in the next HR connect. However, we are sure, the platform has indeed proved helpful in terms of collaborating, building relationships, identifying talents and business areas that could create wonders in Widas! The road ahead is definitely challenging for Bhakti, for, the onus of intelligently tapping the right potential lies on her – More power to you Bhakti!

20th July was one such day, when we literally rediscovered ourselves and our office Buddies. The day that was organized at ‘Octave’ resort, started with a get-to-know-each-other ice breaker session (Thanks to Bhakti and Reshma, our Humble Rockstars!).

Never did we realize the power of prefixing the names of our friends with an ‘Adjective’ that best describe them – it gets even better when the adjective and the name start with the same alphabet! ‘Bright’ Bhakti , ‘Dangerous’ Dinesh , ‘Sacred’ Sanjay  and many more – We suggest you try it out once for yourself and see the wonders it creates!

We then moved on to events such as Guide the Blind folded, Treasure hunt, Passing the Peanut etc. All these events were ‘Team’ events, with more than 10 members per team. The games proved entertaining enough to bring out the kid in us! It was fun to watch our winning teams pounce on their prizes (bunch of chocolates) as if it was their most prized possession! On the other hand, to win the game, there were folks who were ready to stoop down to ground level to ensure their peanuts fell into the cup! Now when was the last time you did that ?!?!?!

Having said that all, there were a lot of untold messages that were conveyed through these events. Many of the games threw light on the importance of the contribution of each team member, in order to achieve a common goal – how critical it is to leverage every team member’s strength and help them overcome their weaknesses and more importantly, how to peacefully handle a crisis!


With quite a number of new joiners over the past few months, the day got all of us well acquainted with each other – And at the end of the day we took home loads of fun-filled memories, inspiring anecdotes, enlightening conversations and above all, a fire to get back to work with a renewed spirit of camaraderie!

Every year, the Java Forum held at Liederhalle, in Stuttgart, offers the opportunity to gain comprehensive information about topics related to Java and software architecture. Anke and Dennis took this opportunity and participated in the various lectures for WidasConcepts.

The highlights include the following presentations:

Research findings and personal experiences with Test-Impact-Analysis – Dr. Elmar Juergens (CQSE GmbH)

The “Test-Impact-Analysis” analyzes already implemented unit and integration tests in such a way that when code changes, only those tests are performed, which were affected by the corresponding changes. In his talk, Dr.Elmar Juergens (CQSE GmbH) presented the execution of a wide variety of test suites of open-source-based tools via tree maps and showed the empirically measured, partly significantly reduced runtimes.

JUnit 5 & Testcontainers – Testing in the times of Java 10 and Docker – Tim Riemer (FNT GmbH)

The new version 5 of the popular Java-based test libraries, which was released in late 2017, is compatible with Java 8 and offers more than a handful of new options for optimally designing and implementing unit tests. These include, among others, the assignment of descriptive display names and the timely execution of individual test steps. In the second part of his presentation, Tim Riemer introduced TestContainers, a library that enables Docker containers (such as databases) to be initialized, started, and stopped using a JUnit test.

JUnit5 and TestContainers will soon be included in the WidasConcepts technology stack.

The time between the lectures was used to gather information on the companies that made presentations at various stalls or to take part in applicable competitions. With 10 out of 15 precise programming languages, Anke was able to impressively prove her profound knowledge in software development 😊

The day ended with one or the other shop talk with colleagues from past projects, where one thing became clear:

The HR Innovation Day on the 02.06.2018 in Leipzig

On the 2nd of June, 2018 I attended the HR Innovations day event, held in Leipzig, to learn about the latest HR trends.


This year’s HR Innovation Day yet again commenced with the motto Innovations in Human Resources. In addition to interesting keynote speeches on artificial intelligence and people analytics, the latest findings on topics such as employee satisfaction, leadership and work techniques were also presented. What makes the HR Innovation Day so unique is the friendly, informal atmosphere between the visitors as well as between the speakers and the audience. A space that allowed for a lively exchange of ideas and discussions on HR.

There were many international speakers, Tom Haak from the HR Trend Institute in Amsterdam and Rebecca Lundin from Celpax in Stockholm to name a few. Phillip Schuch from Dusseldorf and Dr. Daniel Mühlbauer from Munich, also gave us exciting insights into the latest HR methods and trends.

The first lecture started right at 8 am and dealt with evidence-based personnel management. It was about the exploration of fundamental questions such as: What role does motivation play as opposed to meaningfulness and appreciation? What are the differences between the target groups? And is Generation Y really that different from baby boomers? Many exciting questions with apparently many surprising answers as evident from the numerous studies.

One other topic dealt with employee satisfaction. Rebecca Lundin talked about Employee Morale and the ability to capture daily employee satisfaction in an efficient, daily, anonymous and in real-time. The influencing factors that are brought to visiblity in this way allow companies to react timely and in a right manner to positive and negative events.

Cultural Fit was also among the important topics discussed. Christoph Athanas from metaHR, Berlin stressed on the importance of Cultural Fit between employees and companies. Every company is characterized by its own corporate culture, which must be made apparent in job interviews. Because this ensures that the candidate is given a realistic picture of the future employer. But here, the applicant is also involved. Does he get the realistic picture? Which corporate culture really suits him? Yet again, highlighting the need for honest, transparent job interviews.

Lastly, the talk by Martin Gaedt is especially noteworthy here, one who rose to fame with his books “Myth Skilled Shortage” and “Rock your Idea – Changing the World with Ideas” in 2014 and 2016. Anyone who has experienced his talks before, knows that Gaedt himself brings in the required creativity in his lectures. A porcelain plate is smashed, or paper planes are used to illustrate how quickly new ideas can be created, if you only allow creativity. In this article: “Rock your recruiting – 7 billion ways to 7 billion people”, Gaedt definitely calls for innovative HR. With many inspiring and amazing examples on the topic of employee recruitment, it was illustrated, how important creativity is in everyday work life.

Hardly any other industry sees so many innovations, as does IT. With flat hierarchies, an open corporate culture and agile communication methods, we have created a working environment to promote idea think-tanks and facilitate transparent exchange among one another.

Because new ideas not only need creativity, but above all the right environment to implement them.
With this in mind, I wish everyone a creative Monday!

Our team event on 20.04.2018 at the Kraxl Alm in Rutesheim

The 20.04. was not just another ordinary Friday for us. On this day we were not as usual at the programming desk or at our foosball table. No, this day was in the spirit of our team event!

The day started with an inspiring talk by our company founder and managing director Thomas Widmann on the formation of WidasConcepts. We went over some of the interesting past: what went well? But also, what could have been done differently? And prospects for the future: where are we now and what successes we want to celebrate in the future?

Groups were formed, so people across departments were together, with the aim to work on different topics. In particular, the different perspectives of the employees from the other departments were seen. This is not only interesting, but also helps better understand the way each one works.

Then, we had some short snacks on our terrace in the beautiful sunshine. In addition to chatting up with our colleagues from the other branches, there was also the opportunity to welcome new faces.


ASoon after, we all headed together off to the Kraxl Alm in Rutesheim. There was the mini golf, archery or the high ropes garden for a thorough workout.

After 3 exhilerating hours, a well-deserved boost with cool drinks and a hearty buffet was in order.

Visit to the Talent Pro Job Fair in Munich on 22.03.2018

Thursday, the 22.03. started early for us. We had to take the train to Munich, where the TalentPro Career Fair was to be held for the first time this year. As HR officers, we did not want to miss the latest methods and trends in employer branding and talent management. Our first train was delayed, we were afraid that we would miss our connection. Luckily though it was delayed too, and we were able to catch it after all. The system works 😉

We arrived in Munich, and were quite amazed to see the hall full. A total of 62 exhibitors presented topics such as recruiting, employer branding and talent attraction. In addition, there were six different stages where exciting lectures were on, such as one by Kerstin Wagner (Head of Talent Aquisition Deutsche Bahn AG) or Dr. Nico Rose (Vice President of Employer Branding & Talent Acquisition, Bertelsmann SE & Co. KgaA). Numerous best practice examples were also presented in addition to these inspiring lectures. The abundance of topics makes it evident, how diverse HR work is, in the area of employer branding alone.

Ein weiteres wichtiges Thema war vorallem die Digitalisierung der Personalarbeit: Wie werden die neuen Technologien unsere Art zu Arbeiten ändern? Wie werden Arbeitsplätze zukünftig gestaltet sein? Was muss eine zukunftsfähige HR-Abteilung heute schon leisten? Viele spannende Fragen, mit deren Antworten wir uns momentan beschäftigen.

Abschließend war es definitiv eine rundum gelungene Veranstaltung mit viel Input. Hierbei konnten wir viele Ideen und Anregungen mitnehmen, die wir bereits in unserer täglichen Arbeit umsetzen.

Another important topic was the digitization in the human resources field: How will the new technologies change our way of working? How will jobs be designed in the future? What it takes to have a sustainable HR department? Many exciting questions for us to deal with.

It was definitely a successful event, lots of inputs. We were able to take away many ideas and suggestions that we now implement in our daily work.

We look forward now to the next fair in the beautiful Munich!

Founding of the Widas Socializing Club

The Widas Socializing Club was formed at the beginning of the year. The aim of the club is to quickly and more personally integrate the new employees, in some cases to those who have moved, make the evening happy hours more enjoyable and also to give a chance to the existing Widas team members to get to learn about each other also outside of the projects.
After all: “Colleagues are the only partners with whom we do not pair with in general, even though we spend most of the time together with them.” (Manfred Poisel, German copywriter)”. We endeavor to make this as pleasant as possible.

Our first event on February 19, was a complete success. After the sumptuous grill and barbecue, an evening of games was organized. Almost half of all employees took part and the last game was wound up only at about 22:30, which led us to declare the Widas Socializing Club as successful.
Another event was quickly planned, that we set out on April 15, with three groups to Live Escape Game in Stuttgart (a photo can be found on our Facebook page). We then let the evening take its course with paella and tapas. Other events are planned and to follow soon. On the wish-list are among others, Lasertag, bowling and rock-climbing. We hope that the following events will be as fun as the ones in the past and that the number of participants continue to rise!
